Have you ever heard of the Clotilda? Netflix is currently showing a documentary called, “Descendant” that chronicles Cudjoe Kazoola Lewis, his descendants and the Clotilda, the last American slave ship sunk and burned on the banks of the Mobile River in the community now known as Africatown, Mobile, Alabama.
Mr. Lewis, along with others, were stolen from the shores of West Africa solely on a wager of Southern slavers. It’s a fascinating and moving moment in history, and after watching this documentary, my thoughts were, who were Cudjoe’s ancestors? Oh, the questions that I wish I could have asked.
