Unearthing the Roots: Why Knowing Your Family History Matters

Discovering your family’s history can be a powerful and enlightening experience. It can bring a deeper understanding of your identity, your culture, and the struggles and triumphs of those who came before you. This was something that hit home for me when my grandfather passed away at the age of 97 earlier this year. In his final days, our family had the privilege of talking to him about his life, his parents, and his siblings. It was a conversation that gave me a new perspective on the man I knew him to be and made me realize just how much I didn’t know about my family’s past.

As I embarked on my own journey to uncover my family’s history, and fact check my grandfather because he was known to embellish a bit 🤣 I was disheartened to learn that

Only 32% of African Americans can trace their ancestry back to a specific African country or region of origin, compared to 65% of white Americans who can trace their ancestry back to a specific European country.

This staggering statistic highlights a significant disparity in access to knowledge about family history in the Black community. That’s where Finding Deep Roots comes in. When they approached me to design their website, I was elated. I knew firsthand the importance of their mission to close the gap on this disparity. Their dedication to empowering individuals and families with the knowledge of their past is truly inspiring. They don’t just provide a service; they enable people to connect with their roots and honor their heritage.

Knowing where you come from is about more than just tracing your family tree or discovering interesting facts about your ancestors. It’s about understanding your place in the world and the legacy of those who came before you.
