Accidental Gems While Researching

At times when you are researching, you stumble upon an accidental gem. For example, in researching my great Grandfather – Thomas Moon of Vanderbilt, PA, I found a newspaper article in the February 13th issue of “The Daily Courier”, discussing his prowess as an amateur boxer. I presented it to my family elders, and most were unaware of his exploits as a young man.

From what I can read, the article describes my Great Grandfather as a “colored scrapper” challenging Miller’s fighter, Kid Schlinger a “Connellsville youth”. Now in 1925, Tom was 32 years old. The article reads as if Tom was, indeed, a self-promoter of what he could accomplish in the ring. It’s really nice to see the personalities of our ancestors to understand where it comes from in us today.

This article provides a ton of confirming information about my Great Grandfather like a timeline, location, and dates that all can be used to move forward in research.
