Finding Deep Roots: The Importance of Genealogy

In one of our recent workshops, someone asked me, “Why would I want to study my family history?” There are many compelling reasons to explore one’s roots. A quick Google search provides several reasons for studying family history:

• Connecting with family: Tracing your lineage can bring you closer to living relatives and ancestors alike.
• Understanding oneself: Knowing where you come from can offer profound insights into your identity and personal history.
• Preserving history: Documenting your family’s past ensures that stories and legacies are not lost to time.
• Finding missing relatives: Genealogy can help locate long-lost family members and fill in gaps in your family tree.
• Learning about history: Family history is intertwined with larger historical events, providing a personal lens on the past.
• Improving psychological well-being: Understanding your family’s history can enhance your mental health and provide a sense of belonging.

Beyond these very important points, we have seen firsthand the deep personal connections that genealogy fosters. Making connections across time is one of the best feelings in the world. We’ve witnessed it personally:

• A teenager researching his family back to the early 1800s.
• A middle-aged woman seeing her grandparents’ names for the first time.
• An elderly man in awe at the width and depth of his family tree.
• Long separated family members coming together for a much-needed family reunion. (Shout out to the MOONS!)

We often see tears of joy and sadness when people uncover their family stories. The profound connection to family is one of our most foundational ties to our souls. It’s a connection that transcends prejudice and stereotypes, keeps us grounded and reminds us of our shared humanity.
