The Blues: The Backbone of Modern Music

The renewed interest in blues music sparked by Ryan Coogler’s Sinners reminds us of the genre’s deep historical roots and global influence. Born from the lived experiences of African Americans in the Deep South, blues music became the foundation for countless musical genres — influencing legendary rock and roll bands like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles.

Beyond rock, blues laid the groundwork for the emotional storytelling found in jazz, the rhythmic drive behind hip hop, and the soulful expression that shaped generations of pop artists. From Billie Holiday to Kendrick Lamar, traces of blues can be heard in the rhythms, lyrics, and spirit of today’s most powerful voices.

I still remember hearing blues music as a child, playing from the speakers while my aunts laughed, danced, and sang along. We’d chuckle at some of the lyrics — “Pepper Headed Woman,” “Hoochie Coochie Man” — not quite understanding the grown-up meanings, but feeling every beat of that bold, raw emotion. Those moments stay with me, part of a living legacy passed down through music and memory.

Blues isn’t just music — it’s history, resistance, emotion, and legacy. At Finding Deep Roots, we recognize blues as both a cultural artifact and a genealogical clue, helping us trace stories of migration, creativity, and survival across generations. The following article, The Historical Roots of Blues Music, by Lamont Pearley Sr. provides additional insight on the history of Blues music.
